Your Guide to Thermal Underwear: How to Choose Your Level of Warmth

23.10.2025

Thermal underwear is a base layer. It determines whether you will be warm in the cold, dry during activity, and comfortable throughout the day.

But we often hear the same questions: which one to choose? will it be too hot? how to choose your level?

We have collected the most common questions - and answered them simply and to the point

What is thermal underwear and what is its purpose? Its main purpose is thermoregulation. It doesn't just warm you up like regular warm clothing, but performs three important functions:

  • Wicks moisture (sweat) away from the skin
  • Retains heat produced by the body
  • Creates a comfortable microclimate between the body and the outer layer of clothing

How to choose thermal underwear?

  • LVL1 SJ (Single Jersey) - Activity / +5°C and above / training - Lightweight, elastic, like a "second skin"
  • LVL1+ ThermoGrid - Moderate cold / movement / +5°C and below - Balance of warmth and ventilation
  • LVL2 Polarheat - Frost / low activity - Maximum insulation (we recommend combining with the first option)

Will it be too hot indoors? No, if you choose the right level. Thermal underwear does not warm by itself - it only regulates temperature, maintaining a balance of heat and moisture wicking.

Can it be worn daily? Yes. LVL1 and LVL1+ have an anatomical cut, flat seams, and do not chafe, so they are suitable for work, the gym, and service.

What materials is Camotec thermal underwear made from? We use three types of high-tech fabrics:

  • Single Jersey - ultra-thin layer, works like a "second skin"
  • ThermoGrid - elastic with brushed interior
  • Polarheat - "waffle" with air chambers that retain heat

All of them wick away moisture and retain heat, but differ in the intensity of insulation.

How to choose the size? Thermal underwear should fit snugly but not constrict.

Why can't you wear a cotton T-shirt under thermal underwear? Because cotton absorbs sweat and blocks the function of thermal underwear. It's better to create a system: a thin LVL1 under an insulated LVL2 - this works most effectively.

How to know if you've chosen correctly? After a few minutes of activity, you feel warm but not hot, your body is dry - the system is working.
